The Department of Applied Biology and Advanced Research Centre of the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) conducted a national webinar on ‘Recent Advances on Biotechnology and Microbial Infection’ yesterday.
Guest speakers from the field were invited to enlighten the participants with their work, experiences, research contributions and extensive knowledge on the subject. The talk was attended by more than 700 participants across the country.
Chancellor M Hoque welcomed the guests and gave his feelings about the difficulties that the education system is presently facing due to the Covid-19 pandemic. He also said that, despite the odds, the university is still able to host such events.
Vice-Chancellor Prof GD Sharma said that sessions with scientists of high stature will help in creating new knowledge as well as in the development of existing research.
The chief speaker was Dr Asad U Khan, professor of Aligarh Muslim University. His session was on ‘Antimicrobial Resistance – A global crisis: Post Covid Scenario’. Dr Khan explained why many bacteria have become resistant to antibiotics.
Another session was presented by Dr Probodh Borah, professor at Assam Agriculture University, on the subject ‘Novel Molecular Tools and Techniques with Potential Biomedical Applications’. Dr Borah stated that the advances in technology are rapidly improving the range of available biotechnological tools and applications. Dr Borah mentioned that this topic was particularly taken up for the students and research community for them to know about the new and upgraded devices that may help in their future research endeavours.
