Shillong, Aug 29: As part of the ongoing efforts toward urban transformation, the Urban Affairs Department has announced the launch of a grant-in-aid scheme for off-street parking.
This initiative, under the Meghalaya Parking Policy for Urban Areas 2025, is designed to address the growing challenge of traffic congestion in Shillong due to unregulated on-street parking and the rapid rise in private vehicle ownership.
The department said that the scheme aims to augment organised off-street parking infrastructure by providing capital grants to eligible private landowners, Dorbar Shnongs, NGOs and cooperative societies.
“It encourages the development of surface-level, stacked and automated parking facilities, thereby easing pressure on road space and improving urban mobility,” the department stated.
The incentives offered range from Rs 10 lakh for surface-level and stacked parking up to Rs 1 crore or more for automated parking systems.
Proposals will be evaluated by a screening committee. Selected applicants will be responsible for the construction, operation and maintenance of the parking facility.
“All proposed projects shall be utilised exclusively for commercial parking and shall exclude private parking. Furthermore, the applicant shall have the right to collect parking fees in accordance with the rates notified by the competent authority,” the department added.
“The grant-in-aid scheme is a step forward in creating a more organized and commuter-friendly city,” the department added.
The first round of expressions of interest (EOIs) will be accepted until September 30, 2025 and to apply individuals should visit www.invest.meghalaya.gov.in.
