The Synjuk Ki Nongsynshar Shnong Upper Shillong (SNSUP) today met the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah in the presence of Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Kamakhya Prasad and officials of the National Highways Infrastructure Development Corp Ltd (NHIDCL) on the persistent traffic jams in the area from Umshyrpi bridge to Seven Mile.
The SNSUP urged the DC to take action on this issue as the people, not only from Upper Shillong but also from West Khasi Hills, Pynursla, Sohra and Shillong, have been grievously affected.
Extensive roadworks on this stretch are meant to ease congestion but the building process is a painful one for those using the road at present.
According to the SNSUP adviser, Daniel Thangkhiew, Kurbah and the police were told that even ambulances and private vehicles carrying patients, school children, vendors and government employees have all been affected on a regular basis.
On the other hand, the Synjuk also expressed its regret that many of the residents have to get out of their vehicles to walk from 3rd Mile to the city and have to answer the call of nature on the roadside since there are no toilets or petrol pumps nearby.
The DC will conduct a spot inspection tomorrow, Thangkhiew informed.
