Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries, Rameswar Teli, graced a function held in Tura today evening in the presence of Chief Executive Member of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), Benedict R Marak, GHADC Chairman Rakesh Sangma and others.
The function was organised by the GHADC.
While addressing the gathering, Teli highlighted various schemes available through the Union Ministry of Food Processing Industries and informed that different options are being provided to farmers and entrepreneurs with special emphasis for the people of the North East.
Mentioning about the various horticultural products cultivated in the region, such as pineapple, cashews, ginger, turmeric and black pepper and the products being organic in nature, he said that food processing industries could be set up in the region for which interested persons can avail and apply for these schemes. Further, the minister also informed that the ministry provides 50 percent transportation cost subsidy to farmers for exporting their products to other states.
Moreover, stating that Meghalaya has immense potential for organic farming, he said that there is huge potential for food industries in the region and informed that the ministry is focusing on organic farming and products and is thereby providing career options in a sustainable manner. He also informed that under a scheme, he had sanctioned a Mega Food Park for Ri-Bhoi recently.
Explaining in detail the procedures and guidelines for applying for various schemes, he assured his full support and cooperation to ensure these schemes meant for the people of the region and thereby upscale the productivity and economy of the people of the area.
GHADC CEM Benedic R Marak said that this is the first time the Union Minister has visited the district and he apprised the minister of the quality of products available in the region and the initiatives taken by the district council for promoting food industries in the district.
Teli also interacted with entrepreneurs and then inspected examples of the region’s bounty in the form of pure honey from Nokrek, scented candles, local wine made from fruits available, banana and jackfruit chips, etc.
