With new air services having been added in the last few months, through central government subsidy, Umroi Airport is witnessing higher levels of traffic than have ever been recorded of late.
The latest occurred on Monday when, for the first time, more than 500 passengers used Meghalaya’s only functioning airport.
According to a tweet from the Airports Authority of India, Shillong, 261 passengers arrived at Umroi and 242 departed from it, giving the airport a total of 503.
Meanwhile, on December 18, Umroi, which functions as the state capital’s airport, recorded 14 different flights taking off and landing (seven each), again a new record.
Centrally subsidised flights operate from the airport to Dibrugarh, Dimapur, Kolkata, Aizawl, Imphal and Silchar. The only negative point is that the state government subsidised service to and from New Delhi has been put in abeyance by the operator, flybig.
Another record for Umroi is that it hit 8,533 passengers for all of November.
The airport has also been upgrading its amenities, with retail shops, cafes and other features having been added of late.
