The Khasi Students Union (KSU) has accused police of using excessive force on its members who are in custody for the Umoid attack stating that they are being coerced to confess of the crime which they have not committed.
KSU, Mawkyrwat circle president Pauldeep Tongwah in a press release today said, “Despite not being involved in the incident the police and district authorities have been hunting for our members in Mawkyrwat and this has caused a lot of problems for their family members.”
It may be noted that miscreants on the night of February 24, attacked the construction workers at the girls’ hostel of St. Xavier’s College in Umoid. One of the workers identified as Raju Mondal died within a few hours after being admitted in the hospital.
Six people were arrested for the crime which included Shanborlang Kharbani, KSU President of Diwah Unit, Disparland Kharbani and Dance Daniel Myrthong who is a former member of the union.
“The youth who are in police custody are being beaten up and are being forced to confess to the crime,” Tongwah alleged, adding, “These actions adds salt to the injury.”
