Shillong, Dec 14: The Umngot Traditional Boat Race and Tri Hills Ensemble Festival, organised by the Department of Arts and Culture in collaboration with Darrang Elaka, was held on December 12-13 at Darrang, marking the revival of an indigenous river-based tradition alongside cultural and sporting celebrations.
The inaugural day witnessed the arrival of traditional boats along with dignitaries, who were accorded a traditional reception by Darrang Elaka. The dignitaries present included Principal Secretary Fredrick Roy Kharkongor and Meghan O’Regan, Head of Welsh Government at the British Deputy High Commission, among others.
The second day focused on competitive events including the traditional boat race, swimming, water polo, diving and Ngam Um competitions, followed by cultural performances and prize distribution. The programme was attended by cabinet minister Lahkmen Rymbui.
In his address, the minister stated that the festival was not merely a cultural celebration but a platform to reinforce the government’s commitment to river conservation, sustainable tourism and livelihood generation.
He highlighted rejuvenation initiatives supported by the Asian Development Bank, recognition of the Umngot as National Waterway 106, improved connectivity through National Highway 206, and ongoing efforts to promote water-based tourism and employment for local youth. Acknowledging challenges related to land availability and infrastructure expansion, he appealed for community cooperation and reaffirmed the government’s resolve to pursue inclusive development while safeguarding the river ecosystem.
