The bodies of the six victims of the road accident at Umbang Sumer were handed over to church authorities today and will be buried on Tuesday.
The six who lost their lives in the horrifying incident were a priest, three nuns and a teacher from the Bongaigaon diocese in Assam who were on their way to Shillong, along with their driver. The priest was identified as Fr Mathew Das, the parish priest and Principal of St John’s Higher Secondary School in Barama. The nuns were named as Sr Melagrine Dantes, Sr Promila Tirkey and Sr Rossie Nongrum of the Fatima Sisters Congregation. The teacher was identified as Mairan Ranger and the driver as Sanjay Swargiary.
They were killed almost instantly after a truck travelling in the opposite direction jumped the divider and smashed into the Bolero carrying the church team.
The bodies were today handed over to representatives of the Fatima Convent in Barama and Banganpara, Assam, in the presence of their relatives. Last rites will be conducted on Tuesday.
The priest of Nongpoh Parish, Fr Peter Syiemlieh, today conveyed a condolence message to the bereaved families who had lost their loved ones in the fatal road accident.
