‘Ujjwal Bharat and Ujjwal Bhavishya – Power @ 2047’ events were celebrated in various parts of the state today.
In Mendipathar, the programme highlighting the achievements of the power sector, as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, was attended by Deputy Commissioner RP Marak, who lauded the service of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL) in ensuring “the constant supply” of electricity.
“The employees of the Power Department often have to wade through cut-off roads to restore disrupted power connections due to various calamities and, therefore, it was a befitting day to acknowledge their contribution in ensuring the regular flow of electricity,” he added.
Marak also apprised the gathering on the Hydroger Mission. Some 220 hydrogers, which are water-powered generators, will be set up across the state.
In Nongpoh, local MLA Mayralborn Syiem said that the people should take pride in the country’s glorious history and rich culture. He further added that this festival of freedom is dedicated to every citizen of the country who works tirelessly for the country’s progress. He also appreciated the Jal Jeevan Mission, which is bringing piped water to all homes in the country.
In Mawkyrwat, local MDC Carnes Sohshang said that India has achieved a lot in different spheres of life and the government is doing remarkable work in the field of electricity.
In an introductory speech, Executive Engineer KK Raswai informed that the district consumes Rs 72 lakh a month in electricity but the power utility only recovers Rs 44 lakh a month, resulting in a loss of Rs 28 lakh. He therefore urged the public to pay their dues regularly and on time so that it will not create a burden on the company.
