The United Democratic Party (UDP), a member of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, will seek clarification from its coalition partners regarding multiple reports of illegal coal mining and transportation in the state.
“These are serious allegations and we need to have a thorough discussion about them,” senior UDP member and cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh said recently.
Numerous reports of ongoing illegal coal mining and transportation have emerged, with the court-appointed committee, led by retired Justice BP Katakey, finding evidence of such activities in South Garo Hills.
Lyngdoh, who also serves as the MDA spokesperson, added, “We will definitely address this issue with our coalition partners as well as within the MDA, as there are many unclear reports that we need clarification on.”
Earlier, Justice Katakey noted that investigations into seven complaints concerning the illegal mining activities are underway. Notices have been issued to all individuals involved, although one person did not attend the scheduled hearing in Guwahati, which was arranged for their convenience.
He highlighted the importance of transparency in the investigation process, emphasising that complainants should be actively involved and given a fair opportunity to present their concerns.
