The United Democratic Party (UDP) today released its third list of candidates for the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) elections.
The UDP candidates for the KHADC are Synshar Kupar Roy Lyngdoh Thabah (Sohiong) who is also the sitting legislator, Lee Trevor S Bareh (Jirang) and Anthony Khongwang (Nongshken) and Meiowan Pasi (Nangbah-Mihmyntdu) for the JHADC.
The party has so far named three sitting legislators for the KHADC polls, apart from Thabah the others are – Pius Marwein (Langrin) and Mathew Beyondstar Kurbah (Mawphlang-Diengiei).
So far the UDP has declared the names of 22 for the KHADC and 17 candidates for the JHADC elections.
The KHADC and the JHADC goes to polls on February 21 and counting will be held on February 24.
Pasi, the party’s candidate from Nangbah-Mihmyntdu constituency in JHADC said that the employees of the JHADC are facing problems of unpaid salaries.
“The collection of revenue by the JHADC is less and depending solely on the state government is also not reasonable,” he said.
The UDP candidate said that the revenue collection by the JHADC should be strengthened to overcome shortage of funds.
Pasi also said that if he wins he will try to improve the existing Acts of the district council.
He also said that the UDP is the regional party which is rooted in the state and the public have an affection for it.
The UDP’s Nangbah-Mihmyntdu candidate also said that the party’s supporters in the constituency over the years have been supporting it.
Meanwhile, Bareh the party’s candidate from Jirang constituency of KHADC said that the autonomous district council should be strong so that it can protect the indigenous people as envisaged in the Sixth Schedule.
He said that the district councils need MDCs who can protect the land and boundaries of the state and bring in development.
