The United Democratic Party (UDP) has yet to take a final call on whether to field a candidate for the Mawryngkneng by-election.
“The matter is under consideration but we are yet to take a final call whether we will be fielding a candidate or not for the Mawrynkneng by-poll,” UDP leader Paul Lyngdoh told Highland Post today.
The by-election was necessitated following the sudden death of sitting Congress MLA David Nongrum in February.
Informing that the party has already had two consultative meetings with the local constituency committee of Mawrynkneng, Lyngdoh said that the UDP wants to ensure that it fields a candidate who has good prospects of winning the election.
“We have identified two candidates and the UDP already has a presence in the constituency but the by-election has come so suddenly that the UDP is not well-prepared,” the MDC said.
When asked if the UDP will give way for Mawryngkneng MDC Pyniaid Sing Syiem of the National People’s Party (NPP), Lyngdoh said that no such proposal has been discussed so far because the UDP is still discussing the choice of candidates available from the party. The UDP and NPP are allies in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government.
