The Mawkynrew unit of the United Democratic Party (UDP) organised a pre-Christmas get together at Thynroit village today.
Senior UDP figure Jemino Mawthoh was present on the occasion, along with fellow party members and the Sordar of Thynroit. Woolen items were distributed to elderly members of the village.
The meeting of the party members also resolved to strengthen the UDP in the area. The regional party, which is a member of the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance, is hopeful that a rejuvenated party organisation at the grassroots will boost its fortunes in 2023, when the next state elections have to be held by.
The UDP feels positive that it will be able to win the seats of Mawkynrew, Nongkrem and Mawryngkneng.
In 2018 it contested only one of these seats – Mawryngkneng – where it placed a distant fourth place.
