Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong today sat with representatives of Mawbah and their local MLA, Mohendro Rapsang, over the proposed relocation of the residents of Them Ïewmawlong to their neighbourhood, a prospect that they are adamantly opposed to.
Tynsong is the chairperson of the high-level committee looking into the relocation of the Ïewmawlong residents from the Harijan colony. Recently he was quoted as saying that the area around the TB Hospital in Mawbah would be the best place to relocate the 342 families.
The local leaders and Rapsang, however, do not see it that way. According to them, the area is already overpopulated and bringing in another 300-plus families will add to the difficulties already faced.
Rapsang led a delegation comprising the Rangbah Shnong of Mawbah and other traditional leaders to meet with Tynsong, who told them that the committee and government have not made a final decision on the relocation.
The rangbah shnong, David Syiemlieh, said that the population is currently 14,000 and that the residents of Mawbah will not allow those of the Harijan colony to resettle there.
