Two suspected elephant poachers were detained by villagers of Mawpdeng, located near the Assam-Meghalaya border on Tuesday evening, Ri Bhoi police said today.
The individuals, Qurenius Muktieh (27) of Korhadem village and Jethril Umbah (32) of Pamlatar were handed over to police.
Police said two country-made weapons and dry elephant meat were also seized and sent for analysis at the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL).
Forest officials under Sonapur Range under Kamrup East Division, Basistha, Guwahati have informed that two elephant deaths have been reported. The first death of elephant was recorded on November 16, 2024 and the second elephant carcass recovered on March 18, 2025.
“These persons are suspected to be involved in poaching,” police said.
A case under section 325/61(2)/3(5) BNS RW Sec 25(1)/27(1) Arms Act has been registered at Khanapara police station and investigation is on.
