Two cadres of the banned Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) surrendered before Meghalaya police.
Dibarius Jyrwa (32) and Ridor Lyngdoh Nonglait (30) surrendered before the Superintendent of Police, Eastern West Khasi Hills (EWKH), on Thursday stating that they were being misled by one Samuel Wahlang Pahsyntiew, wanted in connection with a case registered at the Shillong Sadar Police Station.
The duo cited frustration over being assigned only menial and cultivation-related tasks for over 15 months—far removed from the HNLC’s purported objectives.
According to police, the two revealed that they fled from Bangladesh on June 20 with the aim of rejoining the mainstream and expressed deep regret for associating with the HNLC.
Meanwhile, HNLC general secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw in an email statement countered their claim and stated that they had resigned.
“These individuals handed us their resignations long before they slithered off to seek safety beneath the State’s skirts. Now they whimper that they needed to work,” Nongtraw said in the email attached with the undated resignation letters.
In two separate letters, the cadres stated they wanted to be with their family and express regret for not being able to perform.
The HNLC said, “So don’t come to us with excuses. Even the government won’t give you a loan without demanding collateral. Your complaints are the language of paper shields…..useless in the heat of the fight. This is not the voice of men who stand for a cause, but the cry of those who have traded courage for comfort.”
“Everyone has to work. Even if you stay under your parents’ roof, you are expected to contribute….no parents feed you for free forever,” the HNLC stated
Stating that it teaches its cadres to be self-reliant, the HNLC said unlike pressure groups that “issue statements and wave banners” they are a “revolutionary movement” that every basic need, big or small, becomes its burden and responsibility.
Nongtraw further claimed that the two cadres have conveniently shifted blame to Pahsyntiew. He said this exposes the lies, incompetence, and moral bankruptcy of the Meghalaya Police, who had earlier arrested Tarzan Lymba for triggering the IED blast that took place in March 2024 at Them Mawlong.
“This abrupt change in narrative exposes the investigation for what it truly is a farce, a desperate charade to show results, not to seek truth. These arbitrary arrests and shifting allegations prove one thing beyond doubt: the Intelligence Department of the Meghalaya Police has utterly failed. Instead of acknowledging the facts and addressing the source of the incident, they drag innocent civilians into custody and use them as trophies to parade before the public,” he stated.
“This is nothing but a trophy arrest and a political farce, staged to fabricate an illusion of success. We demand that the Meghalaya Police stop using innocent people as trophies for their propaganda. This is State-sponsored terror, calculated to sow fear, silence dissent, and cripple our movement through lies and coercion,” he added.
The outfit claimed that hypocrisy is festering inside the Meghalaya Police. It referred to former police officer and ex-chairman of the Garo National Liberation Army, Champion Sangma and stated, “Their own men turning rebel is proof enough that this system is rotten to its very core.”
