Two motorists who tried to run over a traffic policeman in the city were arrested today.
The incident was recorded on a mobile phone by a lady resident from Nongthymmai.
The video which went viral has evoked strong reaction from people who felt the action by the duo was condemnable.
According to police, the driver of a pickup truck having registration number ML05-T-8200 violated traffic regulation at Nongthymmai junction causing obstruction to traffic flow today at around 11:30 am.
Home Guard personnel on traffic duty Dwustar Lyngkhoi of Madanrting Traffic Branch tried to intervene and told the driver to leave the spot.
However, the driver did not comply. Lyngkhoi tried to stop the vehicle but the driver tried to run him over. The video also showed the handyman manhandling Lyngkhoi in full public view.
Interestingly, none of the passers-by came forward to help the traffic personnel.
Later, police arrested the pick-up driver identified as Johnyrias Myrboh of Upper Nongrah and the handyman Augustin Myrboh of Nongrah Umjapung.
The two were arrested by Madanrting police and charged under sections 279, 353 and 34 of IPC for rash driving and assault of a public servant on duty. They have been forwarded to court.
