Two two-lane bridges were today made operational after works got delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong inaugurated the Umpling and Wahumkhrah bridges at separate functions in the presence of local representatives of the area.
The Umpling bridge was closed since 2019 for reconstruction works carried out by the Public Works Department. It spans at 24.75 metres.
Tynsong said that the total project cost was Rs 5 crore and despite the delays, the state exchequer has not had to bear an increase in cost. He also said that with the opening of this bridge will ease the traffic congestion since this bridge was like a corridor connecting to new Shillong Township.
At Weiking, where the bridge was re-constructed over the Wahumkhrah, the Deputy Chief Minister said the bridge will ease traffic congestion to a certain extent and also will be beneficial to the residents of Mawlai, Jaiaw and Shillong city as a whole.
The bridge was funded under the Central Road & Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) for the year 2018-19, at a cost of Rs 5 crore.
