The state government is aiming to be self-sufficient when it comes to oxygen for Covid patient needs when two plants come online next month.
The two cryogenic plants will be set up in Umsawli near Shillong and Jengjal near Tura. The former will be able to fill 1,000 cylinders per day and the latter double that.
The Umsawli facility will be ready by June 15 and the Jengjal one by the first week of June, Director of Health Services Dr Aman Warr said today.
“We expect they will be sufficient and provide a continuous supply of oxygen to the state,” he added.
Six oxygen generators with a capacity of 600 litres per minute are being readied for Shillong Civil Hospital and will be airlifted from New Delhi on May 25. Another oxygen plant was airlifted from Delhi to Guwahati today, earmarked for the RP Chest Hospital here.
Other plants will come up in Jowai, Nongpoh and Tura, all funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and these will be functional by next week. Those being set up in Shillong Civil Hospital, RP Chest Hospital and Ganesh Das Hospital have been funded through the PM-CARES initiative.
