Truck drivers in Ri-War Mihngi, plying from Rngaiñ to Bangladesh, have alleged that the Ri-War Mihngi Truck Owners and Driver’s Association (RMTODA) has been charging Rs 800 per truck at Madan Lyntad and demanded to know on whose authority the collection is being made.
For almost eight months, from September 2020 to April 2021, around 500 trucks go to Bangladesh daily and have to shell out Rs 800, the truck drivers, who requested anonymity, asked, “We want to know who gave these men the authority to collect money from the trucks both in East Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hills?”
“We also have to pay another Rs 500 at Tamabil as coronavirus fees and we wanted to know if this is a government-directed order or some opportunists are taking advantage of the situation,” they said, adding that they also have to pay another Rs 150 at Madan Lyntad, near Pynursla, at parking fees per truck.
They demanded the RMTODA to clarify and convene a meeting with the drivers and truck owners to sort out the matters and stated that if the RMTODA fails to answer, they should stop the collection.
