One person was arrested for the alleged murder of a truck driver in West Jaiñtia Hills district on Monday.
Police said, the driver, Alok Das of Patarkhandi, Karimganj was killed after two persons attacked him when he was sleeping inside the truck outside a Food Corporation of India (FCI) godown in Ummulong.
The person and his accomplice had decamped with a truckload of rice meant for distribution among PDS beneficiaries, police said.
Following a search, the truck was located on a weighbridge with the two suspects inside. While one of them was arrested another managed to escape, police said.
The body of the driver was later recovered from Riaturiem area, inside a deep gorge.
Police said it has been ascertained that the arrested person is a habitual offender while a manhunt has been launched to nab his accomplice even as necessary legal action is being taken.
