The body of a truck driver, Nidayophi Dkhar, was recovered yesterday, two days after the vehicle he was driving plunged into a deep gorge at Mawsynram, near Mawjymbuin cave.
The unfortunate incident occurred on August 13 at around 9am. With the tireless efforts of the people from Mawsynram, residents of Wapung, Khasi Students Union (KSU) members and State Disaster Response Force team, the body was finally recovered yesterday.
The KSU conveyed its condolences to the family of the deceased but also blamed the Mawsynram division of the Public Works Department and the contractor for the accident, as, instead of a wall, sacks filled with soil were used on the road’s edge.
The pressure group also said that the narrowness of the Weiloi-Mawsynram-Ranikor Road also plays a part in such accidents.
