The Trinamool Congress has slammed Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for making allegations against the villagers of Mukroh in connection with the police firing on November 22 which killed five local villagers.
It may be noted that on December 24, Sarma stated in the Assam Legislative Assembly that the brutal killing of five Mukroh residents by Assam police personnel was an “act of self-defence against miscreants”.
This statement was made while the probe is still ongoing and the case filed by the Trinamool Congress with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is still pending.
“After brutally killing five unarmed people of Meghalaya in unprovoked firing, this statement by the Assam Chief Minister is an act of rubbing salt on wounds. What’s shocking, however, is the complete inaction of the MDA government in getting justice for the victims of the Mukroh murder,” Trinamool Congress spokesman Saket Gokhale said today.
“We condemn the insensitive and pre-emptive statement of Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on the Mukroh murder where he seems to have given a clean chit to his police while the matter is still under investigation. This only shows that the investigation is a sham and the final results are pre-determined by him,” the Trinamool Congress said.
Hitting out at the NPP-led MDA government for taking no action on the Mukroh incident, the Trinamool Congress said that although an FIR was registered on the incident in Meghalaya, the State government has restrained the Meghalaya Police from arresting the Assam Police personnel responsible for this murder.
“The NPP and BJP are allies. It is a well-known fact that Assam BJP CM Himanta Biswa Sarma not only controls the Meghalaya MDA government by remote control but is also one of the main people responsible for ensuring adequate election funding for the NPP. As the Meghalaya Assembly elections approach, the priority of the NPP and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is to ensure that Himanta Biswa Sarma and the BJP are kept happy rather than ensure justice for the victims of the Mukroh murder,” the Trinamool Congress said.
“This is also the reason why Conrad Sangma chose to appeal for Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s intervention in the matter rather than empower the Meghalaya Police to take action. Policing is a state subject, and yet, Sangma has turned to his remote controllers in Delhi and Guwahati instead of taking firm action,” the party added.
Stating that it will not allow the brutal murder of five Mukroh villagers “to be sacrificed at the altar of NPP pleasing those in BJP who fund their election campaign”, the Trinamool Congress said that the perpetrators of the Mukroh murder must be arrested by the Meghalaya Police.
“Any attempt to bury the cause of justice for the victims will not be tolerated by the Trinamool Congress and we will continue to fight relentlessly for them,” the party said.
