Assam’s police arrested East Garo Hills District Transport Officer Genekelly G Momin today on suspicion of being part of a racket involved in the falsification of vehicle documents.
The arrest was carried out by Circle Inspector Siraj Ingti and Agia police station in-charge Manimoy Tamuly.
“A strong nexus has been running a business of false documentation of various kinds of vehicles,” Tamuly said.
He explained that it was also alleged that, with the involvement of the DTO, vehicles that had failed the registration process were re-registered in Meghalaya by tampering with the chassis number, etc.
The matter was detected after the arrest of one Gulam Ali whose vehicle documents and engine number did not match. Police also detected similar cases related to two other vehicles.
A case against Ali was registered in Agia police station and during investigation, police found the involvement of Momin. Police also said that they seized three vehicles and five registration papers from his possession.
Goalpara Superintendent of Police VV Rakesh Reddy P said that the DTO’s office recently had a fire incident. “So we have to investigate whether the incident was part of the conspiracy or not, including how many documents were burned in the incident and more will be arrested after the investigations,” he added.
Reddy also thanked the Meghalaya police for their cooperation during the arrest of the DTO.
Meanwhile, Tamuly said they have already listed around 30 vehicles with falsified documents, whose engine numbers and other identifiers have been tampered with.
