Shillong, Feb 4: Ahead of a mock exercise to be held at Amlarem, a training programme on emergency response during earthquakes was conducted today at the Conference Room of the Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil), for members of the Incident Response Team (IRT).
The Incident Response Team (IRT) comprises Sub-Divisional Heads and officials of various departments functioning under the Amlarem Sub-Division, who play a crucial role in coordinated disaster response and management during emergencies.
The training programme was chaired by SDO D. Ksoo, and was conducted jointly by personnel from the Police Department and Home Guards. The session focused on practical emergency response techniques to be adopted during and after an earthquake.
During the training, participants were imparted hands-on knowledge on basic first aid, handling of injured persons, and safe evacuation procedures. Special emphasis was laid on improvised rescue methods, including the preparation of a makeshift stretcher using bamboo poles and blankets, which can be effectively used during emergencies when standard equipment may not be readily available.
The trainers also demonstrated techniques for assessing injuries, providing immediate first aid, and ensuring the safe transportation of victims until professional medical assistance is available. The interactive session enabled participants to gain practical skills and improve their preparedness for real-life disaster situations.
The programme witnessed active participation from members of the Incident Response Team and was aimed at strengthening inter-departmental coordination, preparedness, and response capacity at the sub-divisional level.
The mock earthquake exercise will be held at the Amlarem Secondary School Playground on February 9 to assess and strengthen response mechanisms, create awareness on standard operating procedures and prepare stakeholders for such disasters. Offices, institutions and residents have been asked to cooperate during the exercise.
