A training-cum-duckling distribution programme for farmers was organised by the ICAR KVK Ri-Bhoi, under the NICRA (National Innovations on Climate Resilient Agriculture) project at Thaadnongiaw village.
The event saw the distribution of 600 Indian Runner ducklings to 30 selected farmers. These farmers were also provided with hands-on training on best practices for rearing the ducks, including health management, feeding, and integrating duck farming with their existing agricultural practices.
The Indian Runner ducks, known for their excellent egg-laying capacity and ability to control pests, will help improve soil fertility, reduce the need for chemical pesticides, and boost crop yields, especially in rice farming.
The training also emphasised the role of ducks in enhancing the resilience of farming systems to climate change by providing an alternative source of income through eggs and meat, alongside their ecological benefits.
This initiative aligns with the broader objectives of NICRA, which aims to strengthen climate-resilient agricultural practices, improve farmers’ livelihoods, and promote sustainable farming systems in the region.
ICAR KVK Ri-Bhoi has assured of providing continuous support and follow-up training to ensure the successful integration of duck farming into the participants’ farming systems, further enhancing the sustainability and profitability of their agricultural practices.
