The Synjuk Waheh Shnong, Ri Jaiñtia has demanded a stop to the smart meters project until people are clear about its merits and demerits.
Putting forth its demand, the synjuk led by president Arminiusc Lipon today met Deputy Chief Minister in-charge power, Prestone Tynsong and stated that the smart meters installed in Jaiñtia Hils have discrepancies.
Lipon told reporters that the installed smart meters does not even reduce the energy cost and this affects poor consumers who have to deal with inflated power bills.
“The smart meters have some technical defects as they have not met all technical parameters and their functionality is not perfect,” he said.
He suggested that awareness or public hearings should be held to clear doubts.
Another concern was since people in the rural pockets are not familiar with reading bills sent on their mobile phones, the project could fail, the synjuk said.
Lipon said that the Deputy CM was open to the suggestion made.
