The Meghalaya Joint Council of Trade Unions and Associations (MJCTU&A) held its eighth biennial conference on Saturday here where resolutions were adopted and a new committee elected.
A large number of workers and employees from the public and private sectors participated, a press release said today.
The members adopted resolutions demanding that the central and state governments initiate measures to control “scorching and unbearable” price rise. Other resolutions adopted included the filling up of vacant posts in government departments and public sector corporations, providing more public transport, setting “proper” rates for local taxis in and around Shillong, “reasonable” rates for transport to Guwahati and rates to and from the new Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT).
The MJCTU&A is also against the reported outsourcing of nursing duty staff “by grossly manipulating the provision of appointment of permanent staff”.
The conference began with obituary references where homage was paid to departed leaders, workers and employees, with special mention of the “hundreds of migrant labourers who died under extreme circumstances due to the sudden, unplanned” Covid-19 lockdown in 2020.
The general secretary’s report was then discussed. It dealt on “current international and national issues that are affecting people’s lives and also discussed the future tasks of the workers and employees in the context of the current challenges that are mostly thrust upon by the capitalist-friendly central and state governments in this neoliberal era.”
The new committee was also elected at the conference to take the MJCTU&A forwards.
The previous general secretary, JL Das, was elected as the new president, with Manok Chakraborty elected working president. The three vice-presidents are Joydeep Natha, Lorenzo P Warjri and Pranabendu Bhattacharjee. The general secretary is Edward Lynshing and additional general secretaries are Shivjee Roy and Supriyo Dhar. The assistant general secretary is David Laloo, finance secretary Jayanta Deb, organising secretaries Rishav Shukla, Tapash Das and Navin Nath Das. Seven executive committee members were also elected.
