The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) today warned that any operators of the council’s toll gates who are found to be overcharging transporters risk losing their licences.
The KHADC has several toll gates in West Khasi Hills, East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi and has leased out their operation to individuals. There have been numerous complaints of late that some of these lessees are collecting above and beyond the prescribed rate from trucks passing through the toll gates.
On November 10, the Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners and Operator Association had sought a clarification from KHADC Chief Executive Member, Titostarwell Chyne, on the numerous toll gates which are collecting taxes throughout the council’s jurisdiction and which have brought difficulties to those ferrying agricultural and other products outside the state.
Chyne told reporters after an Executive Committee meeting that the departments concerned will conduct surprise inspections to find out the truth behind these claims.
Meanwhile, Chyne also said that the Executive Committee will ask the various Beat Officers of the Forest Department to seize trucks carrying timber without transit passes.
