The Trinamool Congress (TMC) arrived in Meghalaya like a flash flood but will disappear just as quickly, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Ernest Mawrie has told Highland Post.
The TMC cannot claim to be a national party (it has All India in its official name) as its influence barely extends beyond West Bengal and it will not have any impact when Meghalaya goes to the polls in 2023, he added.
“Even in West Bengal the people are fed up with the TMC party ideology and policies and here in Meghalaya the party came like a flash flood and it will disappear like one,” Mawrie said, adding that the TMC’s failure to win against the BJP in the recent elections in four states also speaks volumes.
Meanwhile, Mawrie informed that BJP is building up its presence from the grassroots level in Meghalaya, with the formation of mandal committees in various locations in Garo Hills.
It would be pointless to fight elections if there is a lack of party organisation, he said.
Mawrie also said that several sitting MLAs will join the saffron outfit following the end of the next Assembly session in July. The BJP currently only has two legislators in the Assembly and one cabinet berth in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government.
“Some (MLAs) have come in person and met us and expressed their desire to contest on our party ticket,” he said.
