Coalition politics has not been good for Meghalaya and Titosstarwell Chyne has asked the people of the state to repose their trust in the United Democratic Party (UDP) and give the regional outfit a clear mandate in next year’s elections.
The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council chief told Highland Post recently that coalitions bring about many problems. The UDP is the second largest constituent member of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance coalition government.
Despite coming up with a common minimum programme, this has reached nowhere as misunderstandings between the parties “always prevail as everyone is working just to strengthen their own party,” he said.
The UDP has faced its fair share of flak for the supposed failings and scandals that have plagued the MDA, but Chyne said that the people who find fault with the UDP do not realise that if the party pulls out of the government, the consequences will be even worse.
Recently, the UDP has been harping on the threat of President’s Rule if it pulls out of the government.
“If our party withdraws support and President’s Rule is enforced in the state, then the people are the ones who will ultimately suffer and all developmental schemes will also come to a standstill, which the UDP would never want to happen,” he said.
However, Chyne expressed hope that the party will be given a majority in 2023 to be able to lead the state and bring in better governance.
“In other states, the people give a single party a chance to lead the state and if the party fails to deliver they change it (at the next election),” Chyne stated.
