Senior NPP MLA Timothy D Shira is set to return as the new Deputy Speaker of the 11th Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
The MLA from Resubelpara today filed his nominations before the Assembly’s Commissioner & Secretary Andrew Simons at the Assembly Secretariat for the upcoming Deputy Speaker’s election to be held on March 20.
Simons said Shira was the only contender to file the nominations for the election and as such he will be elected unopposed for the post.
Meanwhile, the opposition is unlikely to set up any candidate against him.
The MDA-2 government has the support of NPP (26), UDP (11) BJP (2), HSPDP (2), PDF (2) and Independents (2).
The opposition bench on the other hand has a strength of 14 members which include Congress (5), All India Trinamool Congress (5), and Voice of the People Party (4).
If elected, Shira will return to the same post he held from 2018 to February 2023.
