To commemorate the father of Khasi Alphabet, Rev. Thomas Jones on his birthday, which falls on June 22, the Synod College held a memorial lecture here today.
A portrait of the pioneer of the Welsh Presbyterian Mission painted by renowned artist, Benedict Hynniewta was also unveiled on the occasion.
A short reading from the novel ‘Anne Jones’ by N Tariang and a special lecture on “Revisiting the legacy of Rev. Thomas Jones and its implications for the Khasi Jaintia Society: A subaltern perspective” was delivered by Principal of John Roberts Theological College, Rev. Dr B.L Nongbri.
Rev Nongbri hailed Thomas Jones as the prophet of social justice and threw light on his multi-faceted personality. He spoke on the contributions he made to the Khasi Jaintia community in economic empowerment and the essence of identity formation in connection to language.
Principal of the college, Dr R.M Lyngdoh, Vice Principal, Dr. M Rani, Coordinator of the IQAC Dr. G Lyngdoh, Convener of Thomas Jones committee Dr M. Kharryngki, teaching and non-teaching staff and students were present at the programme.
