Two thefts within a week have called into question the level of security provided to state government offices in the area in and around the State Secretariat here.
The first incident occurred on the night of November 13 when robbers broke into the generators that supply electricity to government departments in Secretariat Hills.
According to officials, the thieves stole copper wire worth Rs 10,000 by digging the cement floors that covered these wires and the diesel generator sets were vandalised.
The second theft from the same place happened today morning, less than a week since the first theft.
On this occasion, the thieves scaled the walls of the place and made off with four large batteries.
After the original incident on November 13, the authorities of the Information Technology and Communication Department were preparing to improve the fencing where the generators are housed but, while this work was ongoing, the thieves struck again this morning.
Sources also informed that a syringe was found from the place of theft, though it is not clear whether it is connected to the robberies.
Apart from these cases, the sources said that there have been several other instances of theft reported from the area despite it being a high security zone due to the number of important government buildings there.
