Shillong, Mar 31: As part of the observance of World Tuberculosis Day, the 100 Days TB Free Meghalaya Campaign was officially launched in North Garo Hills at Narongkol, Bajengdoba today.
The programme, organised by the District TB Control Society, East Garo Hills, Williamnagar, aims to intensify awareness on the prevention, early detection, and complete cure of tuberculosis (TB) while encouraging community participation to eliminate the disease.
DM&HO Dr Priya Sengse R. Sangma emphasised the importance of early detection and timely treatment, stating that “TB is a curable disease.” She urged the public to visit nearby health centres upon noticing symptoms such as persistent cough, fever, night sweat or weight loss. She also highlighted various government schemes that provide free diagnosis, treatment, and nutritional support to TB patients, and called for collective efforts from all stakeholders to eliminate TB.
Dr Chrissie Pearly Sangma, District TB Officer for East and North Garo Hills, spoke on the theme “Yes! We Can End TB.” She shared insights on the history of TB and the significance of World TB Day, noting that in earlier times many lives were lost due to delayed diagnosis. Stressing the importance of awareness, she encouraged the community to actively participate in early screening and to support patients in completing their treatment.
As part of the programme, TB Mukt Village Awards were conferred to 11 villages under Gold, Silver, and Bronze categories in recognition of their efforts towards TB elimination.
A pledge to eliminate TB by 2030 was also administered to all attendees.
