Shillong, Feb 3: Shillong MP Ricky AJ Syngkon submitted a memorandum to Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh over severe issues being faced by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Shillong.
Syngkon cited official quarterly reports to point out administrative and academic deficiencies in the central institution.
NIFT Shillong has been functioning without a regular, full-time director, leading to a lack of continuity in decision-making, weakened oversight and limited long-term planning capacity, Syngkon told Singh. Several sanctioned administrative posts also remain vacant, causing excessive workload and delays in administrative processes and student support services, he added.
The academic vacancy report reveals acute shortages of regular faculty, with many teaching posts unfilled, impacting instruction quality, faculty-student engagement and academic programme continuity.
Syngkon requested the ministry to prioritise corrective measures, including appointing a regular director and filling vacant posts, to strengthen NIFT Shillong’s institutional capacity and ensure it meets national institute standards, particularly in the North East region.
