In response to the heinous gang rape case in South West Garo Hills, Ampati police have launched a thorough investigation resulting in significant progress.
It may be recalled that four minors were assaulted, of which two were girls, at Gandhipara villa during the annual Chenga Benga Mela near Garobadha on April 16. While the incident was reported on April 18, the police initiated immediate investigation to nab the culprits.
Medical reports and statements from the victims confirmed they were tied and mentally tortured, with one subjected to gangrape.
As of today, seven individuals have been apprehended in connection with the crime.
Initially, four suspects were detained, and following comprehensive interrogations and technical analysis, an additional three suspects were apprehended today.
All arrested individuals hail from Teporpara, South Salmara in Mankachar district of Assam, situated near the site of the incident.
The arrested individuals are currently under police custody for a period of five days, as investigations continue to unfold.
While certain suspects remain at large, police from Ampati police station in collaboration with Assam Police, are diligently working to locate and apprehend the remaining perpetrators.
South West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police, Vikas Kumar has assured the public of the unwavering commitment by police to bring all those responsible for this reprehensible act to justice.
“Updates regarding the case will be provided as the investigation progresses,” Kumar said.
Meanwhile, members of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) will visit South West Garo Hills tomorrow to inquire into the gangrape case. The NCPCR team is likely to form a committee to look into the case.
