A high level meeting of officials of Urban Affairs Department and Shillong Municipal Board will meet on September 22 to decide on the newly found alternative site for relocating the residents of Sweepers Colony.
It may be mentioned that the State government has proposed to shift the 342 families of the colony to the quarters of Shillong Municipal Board in Bishop Cotton Road.
During hearing of a writ appeal by Harijan Panchayat Committee in the division bench of Meghalaya High Court today, the State government said that it had identified the alternative site falling under European Ward for rehabilitation of the residents of Sweepers Colony.
The State government also informed the High Court that a high level meeting will be held on September 22 to discuss and take a call on the matter.
“The matter has been lingering for quite some time. Other sites had been identified earlier. It is hoped that both the State and the appellant resolve the matter as expeditiously as possible,” the High Court said while listing the matter for hearing on October 21.
Recently, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong had asked the Urban Affairs Department and Shillong Municipal Board to bring the design and estimates for construction of the quarters in the 2.4 acre land.
As per the technical report prepared by the Urban Affairs Department, all the 342 families can be accommodated in the same place.
Tynsong informed that twelve blocks will be built and each will have 30 to 40 dwelling units.
He also said that since the existing buildings are not strong, they will be reconstructed in the area.
