The State government is looking at the defence land to relocate residents of Sweepers Colony at Them Ïewmawlong subjected if the centre agrees.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said the state government has requested the government of India to allocate 2.5 or 3 acres of defence land opposite a petrol pump at Ïewmawlong to shift the 342 families.
“If the Government of India can do that, I am sure the process will not be delayed. We will be able to resolve this issue,” he said.
Tynsong said if the centre does not agree, the State already has a blueprint ready. He also said that all stakeholders have to wait and “with the blessing of the government of India we will get the land.”
He also said that discussions on relocation of the Gurudwara located in the area have not yet commenced.
It may be mentioned that the Urban Affairs Department had come up with a blueprint to accommodate all the families in dwelling units that will be created in place of the existing Shillong Municipal Board land at Bivar Road here.
The government’s relocation plan involves providing 3.6 acres of land for the resettlement, including 2.14 acres within the existing municipal board premises and an additional 1.4 acres opposite the premises.
The blueprint proposed the construction of 30-40 flats in 12 blocks on a 2.5-acre plot of land.
