Police cracked the case of a brutal home invasion, news of which shocked the city, wherein an elderly woman was attacked inside her own home during a robbery.
It was on July 29 that Janati Toi (70) was assaulted in her own home in Umsohsun here by a masked assailant at around 6:45pm. Toi, alone in the house, bravely fought against her attacker and pulled off his mask, whereupon he fled the house but not before stealing her gold ring, ATM card and mobile phone.
Toi was also left with severe injuries and was taken to hospital after she summoned help from relatives.
During their investigations, police narrowed down on a man (name not revealed) from Mawblei who was suspected to have been involved in the crime.
On August 1 a raid was conducted on the suspect’s house and, during interrogation, he confessed to his role in the crime and informed that the gold ring stolen from the victim was sold to a jeweller in Mairang.
The ring was later seized by police and the accused was arrested and forwarded to court, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtnger informed today.
