The Border Security Force (BSF) apprehended three suspected smugglers and seized 1,000 kg of sugar in South Garo Hills before it could be smuggled into Bangladesh.
The operation was carried out yesterday. The accused smugglers are all Indians.
The 181 Battalion of the BSF Meghalaya was involved in the operation when its personnel noted suspicious movement along the international border. When the vehicle was stopped and checked sugar concealed under a layer of sand was recovered.
The BSF said the driver and co-drivers failed to produce any valid documents pertaining to the consignment of sugar.
The persons and the seized consignment have been handed over to the customs office in Dalu for further legal formalities.
