Inclement weather did not dither the spirit of young school students and officials in Mawkyrwat as they braved rain to attend the inaugural function of the inter-school athletic meet.
About nine schools are participating in the event which was inaugurated by South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Caramai Kharkongor at Saitsnad Mawlangwir Sports Club field.
Kharkongngor expressed her immense pleasure that despite the inclement weather different schools took part in the event. She said that sports is as important as education if used effectively, “Sports can be viewed as a career and a profession not just an extracurricular activity and if taken up seriously it can take you to greater heights and ambitions in life”, she added. “With the advancement in technology events can now be viewed through social media platforms”, she said.
While adding that it is a moment of joy and pride for the people of the district where its athletes earned medals during the Meghalaya Games 2022, she said this shows that the people can excel well if they were given the right training and coaching.
She inspired youths to be disciplined in whatever they intend to do and to always refrain from bad habits. While stating that substance abuse which is rampant these days has become a problem she therefore encouraged them to indulge in sports activities, a channel which will lead them to the right track.
Kharkongor encouraged them to imbibe discipline and competitive spirit, which will take them forward in life.
District Sports Officer, Damang Syngkon informed that the district had earned 11 gold, 6 silver and 8 bronze medals, a promising achievement for the district.
