Shillong, Aug 5: Search efforts for Agriculture Officer Teseng M. Sangma, who was swept away in Ganol River, have become complicated due to the strong currents and excess water being released from the hydel project upstream at Chibragre.
Sangma, a resident of New Tura, was on a family outing to a popular picnic spot on August 3 when he was caught by the river’s strong currents and disappeared despite immediate rescue attempts.
Today, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) began the operations at 6:30 am and concentrated their efforts downstream at Pelga Waterfalls. However, the operations did not yield any result till it was called off today at 7 pm due to poor visibility.
The Directorate of Civil Defence & Home Guards said the strong currents and excess water being released from the Ganol Hydel Project posed great obstacles for the SDRF team, including the Fire & Emergency Services as well as the locals.
Director of Civil Defence MK Sangma also reviewed the search operations and provided important inputs to the SDRF team.
The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has advised locals to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines during the search operation.
