Shillong, Aug 18: To promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated the STEM fusion workshop and student exhibition at the State Convention Centre, here today.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister recalled his experiences as a student, noting that Science and Mathematics were often perceived as daunting subjects. He emphasised the need to make STEM education more engaging, interesting, and attractive, particularly for young students.
Sangma highlighted the efforts of the government and organizations like North East Centre For Technology Application and Research (NECTAR) and Smart Village Movement to create a more interactive and immersive learning experience. He suggested establishing more STEM labs and introducing mobile labs to reach a wider audience.
The Chief Minister also stressed the importance of Science and Maths competitions, urging the Education Department to organize regular events and competitions at various levels, culminating in a state-level competition.
To encourage student participation, Sangma announced a cash prize of Rs 2 lakhs for the first prize, Rs 1 lakh for the second prize, Rs 50,000 for the third prize, and Rs 10,000 for each participating school/group. Additionally, the government will fund select innovative projects exhibited by students.
The event was attended by Principal Secretary Sampath Kumar, Director General of NECTAR Arun Kumar Sharma, and Director of Education, Government of Meghalaya.
