The farmers of Meghalaya are facing grave difficulty in procuring fertiliser due to its high cost on the open market, activist Egenstar Kurkalang has told the Agriculture Department.
In a letter sent today, Kurkalang said that the government’s discontinuation of providing subsidised fertiliser to farmers has forced the latter to obtain it on the open market, where it can cost anywhere between Rs 800 to Rs 1,200 for a 50kg bag.
The state government’s organic manure initiative has also been unable to meet demand and this has all had a dire effect on production, he added.
