Shillong, Feb 23: Due to a revised devolution structure under the 16th Finance Commission, Meghalaya will lose approximately Rs 1,500 crore annually as its central share of taxes.
Briefing the media after presenting the budget for 2026-2027, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, who holds the Finance portfolio, said he expects to make gains in other areas, such as GST, excise duty, VAT and non-tax returns.
On the state’s inconsistent revenue collections in recent years due to disputes with Bangladesh and the long transition to so-called scientific mining, Sangma said he hoped that in the coming financial year there will be an impact of Rs 200 crore with the situation in Bangladesh improving.
The CM also said that with a few scientific mining licences granted and more in the offing, he expects the revenue from this sector to increase.
