The state government is studying ways and means of enforcing a Meghalaya High Court order to conduct surprise checks on Army vehicles after allegations emerged that drugs are being transported in military trucks.
The court order is being studied at the highest levels of the state government, Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui informed.
“As of now, it is too premature to reply on the issue. But, for the interest of the state, we do not want such illegal activities in Meghalaya,” Rymbui said. “It is the duty of the state to check the drug menace.”
The government does not have information on such activities but is duty bound to follow the High Court’s order, he added.
Action will also be taken against any state government vehicle found to be involved in transporting drugs, he warned.
The court had recently directed surprise checking of Indian Army and Assam Rifles vehicles in the State to look for illegal transportation of drugs after hearing a PIL.
The directive comes after an Army Major from Imphal being implicated in facilitating the transit of drugs across the region.
During the hearing, the Amicus Curiae had submitted that since Meghalaya falls within the transit route of drugs emanating from a neighbouring country or going to such neighbouring country, there is a modus operandi which is being followed.
