Shillong, Apr 1: The Indian Sailing League (ISL) at the Orchid Sports Complex concluded as the State now sets its sights on hosting the 4th North East Regatta from April 2-6, aimed at establishing Umiam as a key destination for competitive water sports in India.
The ISL event saw participation from 182 sailors, including 58 international competitors from countries such as Russia, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka.
The five-day event featured intense competition among 14 franchises competing in various formats.
The Bhopal Tritons emerged victorious, with the AJ’s Vizag Vikings claiming second place, while the home team, Shillong Umiam Navigators (SUN), secured a podium finish in third.
Other notable teams included the Deccan Skippers, Vir Cholas, and Pune Peshwas, who finished in fourth, fifth, and sixth places, respectively.
During the closing ceremony, Sub-Divisional Officer of Ri-Bhoi District Chaitanya Awasthi commended the talent and sportsmanship displayed, emphasizing the need for continuous support in nurturing talent to compete at the Olympic level.
Admiral Karambir Singh, former Chief of Naval Staff, praised the state’s infrastructure and commitment to the event’s success. League Commissioner Alok Kumar Yadav highlighted the positive innovation within the sport and expressed optimism for future seasons.
