In order to ease congestion in Shillong city, the State government has decided to shift the State secretariat to the New Shillong Township.
The State cabinet which met here today approved the proposal for shifting of the administrative building of the State government to the New Shillong Township.
“The cabinet has approved the shifting of the administrative building of the Government of Meghalaya to the New Shillong Township near Mawpdang Mawkhanu,” Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui told media persons.
Rymbui also informed that the State government has acquired 807.7 acres of land in the New Shillong Township near Mawpdang Mawkhanu for the purpose.
According to him, the foundation stone for the same will be laid on January 21, which will coincide with the 50th year of statehood celebrations.
Rymbui also said that other government offices will also be shifted to the new site.
It may be noted that the new Assembly building is being constructed at an 80-acre land at Mawdiangdiang in the New Shillong Township. The building is expected to be completed by May this year.
