One of the last living stalwarts of the Meghalaya state’s movement, Binsing R Marak breathed his last yesterday in Tura.
Marak died at the Tura Civil Hospital from infection due to Covid–19 just two months before he would have turned 99.
The retired state movement leader held a number of positions in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) including the posts of EM, Deputy EM as was also a two term CEM of the Council. The late leader was an MDC for 27 years in the GHADC.
Late Binsing R Marak was born on October 31, 1922.
He joined the political struggle in 1947 at the young age of 23 by joining the Garo National Council, the only political party in the region during his time which was struggling for a separate Meghalaya state out of Assam.
In 1942 he volunteered and joined the British forces in World War II and was given rank of sector commander of the Garo Porter Corps in Burma. During his days in the war, he ensured urgently needed food and supplies reached the British forces that were clashing with Japanese troops who invaded and took over much of the area.
He was first elected to the GHADC from Babelapara constituency in 1957 and continued as member for consecutive terms from the same seat, until 1983 when he retired from active politics. During the late 70s and early 80s, Binsing was the CEM of the GHADC, a position he held for 2 terms.
He is survived by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
